Man Says His Neighbor Installed a Camera Facing His Backyard — Then Claimed It Was “Just for Security”
A man on Reddit said he didn’t think much of the new camera at first. His neighbor had recently done some work on their house, and the camera showed up around the same time. It was mounted high on the side of the neighbor’s home, angled outward. From a distance, it looked like a typical security setup.
According to his post, the issue became obvious once he stepped into his own backyard. The camera wasn’t just covering the neighbor’s property—it was pointed directly into his yard. He said it had a clear line of sight to his patio, part of his house, and the area where his family spent most of their time outside.
At first, he tried to ignore it.
But the more he thought about it, the more uncomfortable it felt. He said his family used the backyard regularly, and the idea that someone could be watching or recording made it hard to relax in his own space.
So he decided to bring it up.
When he approached his neighbor, he said the conversation didn’t go the way he expected. The neighbor told him the camera was for “security” and claimed it needed a wide angle to cover their property. According to him, the neighbor acted like it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t seem concerned about where the camera was pointed.
He asked if they could adjust it.
The neighbor refused.
That’s when the situation started to escalate. The man said he went back and took a closer look at the camera’s positioning and realized it could see more than he initially thought. From certain angles, it appeared to capture activity near his windows as well.
He said that crossed a line for him.
After that, he started documenting everything—photos of the camera, its angle, and what parts of his yard were visible from it. He also looked into local laws about surveillance and privacy, trying to figure out what his options were.
When he brought it up again, the neighbor reportedly became defensive and said he was overreacting. The conversation turned tense, and no agreement was reached.
At that point, he said he considered next steps.
He mentioned possibly installing barriers or privacy screens, but also looked into whether he could take legal action if the camera was clearly recording his property. He said he didn’t want to turn it into a bigger conflict, but also didn’t feel comfortable leaving it as is.
By the end of his post, he said the situation was still unresolved. The camera remained in place, and the neighbor hadn’t made any changes. What started as a small detail on the side of a house turned into something that made him feel like he no longer had full privacy in his own backyard.
