Man says his best friend got too drunk and tried to sleep with him at a friend’s summer house — and two days later the whole weekend ended with both of them finally admitting they were in love
A man on Reddit said he went into a weekend trip with a close female friend thinking there was heavy flirtation between them but no clear plan to act on it. He wrote that every year he and his old university friends spent a few days at a friend’s family summer house, and this time he brought his best friend along. During the first night, they were drinking with the group, watching a movie, and gradually went from sitting together to holding hands and cuddling.
When they finally got up to go to bed, he said it became obvious how drunk she really was. He had to help her down the hall because she could barely walk, and once they got to the bedroom she started coming on to him hard. According to his post, she nibbled his ear, fumbled with his belt, tried to pull his shirt off, and finally asked him, in a slurred, giggly voice, if he wanted to sleep with her. He admitted the answer was yes, but said she was far too drunk to consent, so he kept stopping things and trying to get her settled down instead.
He said he left briefly, came back to find her half-dressed and still trying to come on to him, then helped her get ready for bed and got in beside her. She kept trying again, but he told her they were just going to lie there and sleep. She cuddled up to him and passed out. In the original post, he said he had never been in that kind of situation before and did not know whether to bring it up in the morning or wait for her to mention it first.
The next morning, she woke up sick and asked him if anything had happened. He told her no, but also told her she had tried. She asked why he had not gone through with it, and he told her plainly that she had been too drunk and he did not know if that was really what she wanted. She thanked him for not taking advantage of her, but the conversation did not go much further right then because she was still throwing up and the whole group was trying to get out the door for the day.
Later that evening, after everyone got back from the pub, the two finally had a quieter moment in the kitchen. He asked her directly whether the night before had just been a drunken mistake or if it was something she had really wanted. She tried to dodge the question at first, but eventually gave him what he took as the answer, saying alcohol had been “liquid courage.” He then told her that no matter how attracted he was to her, their friendship mattered more than drunk sex and that he would never take advantage of her. From there, the conversation shifted. He told her she was beautiful, intelligent, kind, and that she would make someone very happy — and then admitted she would make him very happy. They kissed.
That should have been the turning point, but the night derailed almost immediately. He said one friend’s wife stumbled drunkenly into the kitchen and then a bigger fight broke out between that couple. According to his post, the marriage was already falling apart and the husband was in bad shape, so he stayed with his friend for a long time trying to calm him down. By the time he finally got upstairs, the woman he liked was already asleep. He said he tried to wake her, but she was an extremely heavy sleeper and was completely out. He realized she had likely gone to bed expecting him to come up after her and felt awful about it.
The next morning, they woke up spooning. He kissed her right away and apologized for never coming up the night before, explaining what had happened with his friend. She told him she had heard the fighting and tried to stay awake waiting for him, but had fallen asleep. They did not have much time to talk because they had to catch a train, and he said the ride home dragged on all day because of delays. Still, it was not as awkward as he feared. He wrote that they held hands, he put his arm around her, and she leaned against him for most of the miserable trip.
Once they finally got back to his place, where she had left her bike, they started talking more honestly. He said they discussed what exactly they were doing, whether taking the next step would ruin the friendship, and whether they should risk it anyway. At that point, he stopped trying to circle around it and told her he was in love with her. She told him she was in love with him too.
By the final update, what began as one very messy drunken night had turned into something much simpler. He said they had both wanted each other for a while, but it took one chaotic weekend, one moment of restraint, and a long series of awkward conversations for them to finally say it out loud.
