Woman says she canceled her wedding after her future mother-in-law tried to poison her — and the final update revealed the man she was about to marry turned out to be even worse than his mother
A 29-year-old woman on Reddit said she had been with her partner for 12 years and thought she knew exactly what kind of family she was marrying into. His mother had always hated her, but she kept trying to make it work because she loved him and believed he would protect her when it mattered. Instead, by the time she was three months pregnant and planning their wedding, everything started collapsing at once. She wrote that after they got engaged, she hired a wedding planner and began organizing the event, but her future mother-in-law immediately started attacking her character. According to the post, the woman’s father was not in the picture, and the mother-in-law seized on that, saying it was tradition for the bride’s father to pay for the wedding and that since she did not have one, she should shoulder the cost herself. The fiancé pushed back a little, but not in any lasting way.
The real breaking point came during food tasting. The woman said she had already communicated a list of serious allergies, including nuts, to the coordinator. But when she started trying the banquet food, it included the exact things she was allergic to, and she ended up in the emergency room while pregnant. She later learned the planner had never received her allergy list correctly. The coordinator showed that her fiancé’s allergy email had arrived normally, but on the email coming from the mother-in-law’s computer regarding the bride’s allergies, it falsely stated there were none. The fiancé immediately accused his mother of doing it. The woman wrote that this was not just an “oops” moment to her — it was a woman knowingly putting both her and her unborn child in danger.
Even after that, she still did not cancel immediately. What finally broke her trust was her fiancé himself. She said he had already promised in the past to cut his mother off and failed, letting her back into their lives again and again. So this time, when he said he was willing to stay away from his family for her and the baby, she did not believe him. Instead, she quietly began canceling wedding arrangements, recovering what deposits she could, and moving the refunded money back into their shared savings. When her fiancé found out because the cake order had been canceled, she met with him and told him directly that she no longer felt safe marrying him. She said she still loved him, but she did not feel safe for herself or her baby being tied to a man who kept letting dangerous people back into their lives. She gave the ring back and split the shared money according to what they had always agreed. Meanwhile, his mother was already spreading rumors that he had ended the engagement because the baby was not his.
The first update, posted January 15, 2024, made everything worse. She wrote that she begged her ex to publicly deny his mother’s lie that she had cheated and that the baby was not his. Instead of defending her, he told her they should do a DNA test “so his mother will stay silent.” That was the moment she said she truly saw him for who he was. Even then, he would rather cater to his mother than protect the woman carrying his child. She told him she would not play along just to make his mother happy, blocked him, and consulted a lawyer about custody and parental rights. She also said his sister later told her shocking things about him, and that he had been unfaithful too.
The final update, posted February 23, 2024, showed just how bad the situation had become. By then, she had legally left the country and was back in Chile with her mother, where she planned to have the baby around late April or early May. She said her lawyer got permission from the judge for her to leave and handle statements by video call if needed. She also wrote that the criminal complaint could not simply be dropped because the charges were too serious. In the same update, she revealed that her ex had also cheated on her, something she said she was still struggling to process because he had always harshly judged unfaithful men and presented himself as above that kind of behavior. Her support system in Chile rallied around her, helping her finish preparing for the baby and letting her rest while they took care of things around the house.
She also explained what future contact with the father might look like. According to her comments in the final update, whether he would ever see their daughter depended entirely on his actions. She said if he showed real proof that he was in therapy for anger management, she would consider limited contact. At first, that would only be through video calls. If he got out of prison and continued therapy, he might be allowed to visit in person in Chile, but only with male relatives present, and he would never be allowed to take the child out of the country. She sounded heartbroken but clear-eyed by that point. In her own words, he turned out to be “the same or worse than his mother.”
So what began as a woman nervously planning a wedding while pregnant ended with poison at a tasting, a canceled wedding, slander about the baby’s paternity, a cheating fiancé, criminal charges serious enough the case could not be withdrawn, and a mother-to-be fleeing home to another country just to feel safe enough to have her child.
