Woman says her coworker kept asking personal questions — and then used the answers against her at work

In a Reddit post, one woman said the situation didn’t feel strange at first. She wrote that a coworker had started making casual conversation during breaks, asking about her life outside of work. According to the post, the questions seemed normal in the beginning—things about her schedule, her family, and what she had going on outside the office. It felt like the kind of small talk that happens when people are getting to know each other.

But over time, she said the questions became more detailed. The coworker started asking about her availability, how she handled certain responsibilities, and what she had on her plate outside of work. She wrote that she answered honestly, not thinking much of it, because nothing about the conversations felt directly connected to anything serious at the time.

According to the post, the shift happened when those same details started coming up in a completely different context. She said her coworker began referencing things she had shared in conversations when talking to their boss—framing it in a way that made it seem like she was less available or less focused on work than she actually was. What had been casual, off-the-clock information suddenly became part of how she was being seen professionally.

By the time she wrote the post, the situation had gone from uncomfortable to frustrating. She said she felt like she had been open in good faith, only to have that information turned into something that worked against her. The part she was trying to figure out was how to handle it moving forward—how to protect herself without escalating things into a bigger conflict at work. What started as normal conversation had turned into something she now saw very differently.
