Tenant Says He Opened His Door to a “Maintenance Worker” — Then Found Out the Visit Was Never Scheduled

A man on Reddit said he was home one afternoon when he heard a knock at his apartment door. When he opened it, a man was standing there in what looked like work clothes, holding a small toolkit and saying he was there for maintenance.

According to his post, the man at the door acted like everything was routine. He said he needed to check something inside the apartment and stepped forward like he expected to be let in. The tenant said it caught him off guard, but something about the situation didn’t feel right.

He asked what the visit was for.

The man gave a vague answer—something about checking a unit issue—but couldn’t point to anything specific. He also didn’t mention which management company he worked for or provide any kind of notice that the visit had been scheduled.

That’s when the tenant hesitated.

He said he told the man he hadn’t received any notice and asked him to come back later. The man pushed back slightly, saying it would only take a minute, but the tenant still refused to let him inside.

The man eventually left.

At first, the tenant thought maybe it had been a miscommunication. But something kept bothering him, so he contacted his apartment management office to ask about the visit.

They told him no maintenance had been scheduled.

That’s when the situation changed.

According to his post, the office confirmed that no one from their team had been sent to his unit or the building that day. They also said they hadn’t authorized any outside contractors to do work.

The tenant said that realization hit hard—whoever had knocked on his door had not been supposed to be there at all.

He started thinking back through the interaction. The way the man tried to step inside, how quickly he pushed to get in, and how vague his answers were. It didn’t feel like a mistake anymore.

He said he alerted management right away, and they sent out a notice to other tenants warning them not to let anyone in without verified notice. Some neighbors reported similar knocks, though not everyone had answered the door.

From there, the tenant said he became much more cautious. He stopped opening the door unless he was expecting someone and made sure to verify any future visits directly with management.

By the end of his post, he said the part that stuck with him wasn’t just the encounter—it was how normal it felt at first. If he hadn’t stopped to question it, he said he likely would have let the man inside without thinking twice.
