Woman Says Her Roommate Used Her Groceries for a Gender Reveal Party — Then Called It “Borrowing”
A 24-year-old woman says she hit her limit after her roommate used her groceries for a gender reveal party without asking first, then acted like the missing food was not a big deal because it was “just snacks.”
The woman shared the situation in a Reddit post, explaining that she lives with a 26-year-old roommate. They split rent, but they buy groceries separately because they have different budgets and diets. That setup had always been clear: shared apartment, separate food.
According to the post, the roommate was planning a small gender reveal party for a friend and asked if she could host it at the apartment. The poster agreed because she thought it would be a simple gathering. She did not agree to provide food for it.
But after the party, she opened the fridge and pantry and realized a lot of her groceries were gone.
The roommate had apparently used her fruit, cheese, crackers, drinks and other food items for the party table. Some things had been fully eaten. Other items had been opened and left half-used. The poster said the food was not cheap, and she had bought it for herself for the week.
When she confronted her roommate, the roommate brushed it off and said she had “borrowed” some things because she ran out of time and did not think it would matter. That answer only made the poster angrier. Borrowing usually means asking first and returning or replacing what was taken. In this case, the food was already eaten by party guests.
The poster told her roommate she needed to pay her back. Her roommate got defensive and said she was making the situation awkward over a few groceries. She also argued that the party was for a special moment and that the poster should be more understanding.
That did not land well.
From the poster’s point of view, the special moment belonged to someone else, and her grocery budget should not have been quietly pulled into it. She was not trying to ruin a celebration. She was trying to figure out why food she bought for herself had been turned into a party spread without anyone asking her.
Commenters mostly sided with the poster. A lot of people said the roommate did not “borrow” anything because the food was consumed and could not be returned. Others said hosting a party means paying for your own supplies, not raiding your roommate’s fridge because you planned poorly.
Several commenters told the poster to send a clear list of what was taken and ask for repayment in writing. Some suggested she stop giving the roommate any wiggle room by using softer words like “borrowed” or “shared.” The food was hers, the roommate used it without permission, and now the roommate owed her money.
Others focused on the bigger roommate issue. If someone is comfortable taking groceries for a party once, commenters said it may happen again unless the boundary is made very clear. A few suggested separate shelves, labels or even a mini fridge if the roommate refuses to respect food boundaries.
The roommate’s “special moment” defense also annoyed people. Commenters said a gender reveal party may be meaningful to the people involved, but that does not make another tenant responsible for funding the snacks. One person pointed out that the roommate had enough time to plan a party but apparently not enough time to buy crackers and drinks.
By the end of the thread, the poster did not come across as someone being petty over food. She came across as someone who had a clear household agreement and watched her roommate ignore it the second it became convenient.
The issue was not fruit or cheese by itself. It was the assumption that her groceries could be used as backup party supplies, then dismissed as “just snacks” once the damage was done. And when you are the one paying for the food, that kind of “borrowing” starts looking a lot more like someone helping herself and hoping you will feel too awkward to ask for your money back.
