10 Cleaning Products Every Southerner Always Has On Hand

If your house is anything like mine, cleaning up after little hands is just part of the daily routine. Whether it’s sticky counters, spills that defy the laws of gravity, or that one crayon mark no one will admit to, messes are kind of a given. That’s why I’ve learned to keep certain cleaning products on hand at all times—it’s about being ready for whatever chaos unfolds.

Growing up in the South, I picked up a few tricks from my mom and grandma, who always swore by these must-haves. They’re not just effective—they’re practical, affordable, and make cleaning a little less overwhelming. When life gets messy (which it always does), these staples help me stay ahead of the game—most of the time, anyway.

All-Purpose Liquid Detergent

An all-purpose liquid detergent is a must in my cleaning lineup, especially with eco-friendly options being safer for little hands and big messes. I keep a gallon of castile soap on hand because it’s versatile and lasts forever. A few drops can clean floors, countertops, or even toys, making it a total game-changer.

I also love that it’s non-toxic. It’s like peace of mind in a bottle when you’re scrubbing down high chairs or the kitchen table—places where those little hands are always grabbing. Plus, it won’t leave behind any harsh chemical smells.

Borax

Borax is one of those old-school products that’s still around for a reason—it works. Whether I’m dealing with tough laundry stains or scrubbing soap scum in the bathroom, a sprinkle of borax gets the job done. It’s affordable and super versatile, making it an easy addition to your cleaning stash.

I’ve also used it to freshen up carpets and even unclog drains (mixed with boiling water). Just keep it out of reach from the kids since it’s not something you want little ones getting into.

Lemons

Lemons aren’t just for your iced tea—they’re little cleaning powerhouses. The natural acidity makes them perfect for cutting grease and removing stains. I’ll slice one in half, sprinkle it with salt, and scrub cutting boards to remove odors and lingering bits. It’s like giving them a fresh start.

If your microwave smells funky, pop a bowl of water with lemon slices in there and heat it up for a minute or two. The steam loosens gunk, and the fresh citrus scent is an added bonus.

Salt

Salt is one of those simple things that does so much more than flavor food. It’s amazing for scrubbing tough stains, especially on cast iron pans or grimy sinks. I’ll mix it with a little vinegar or lemon juice and use it to tackle spots that regular cleaners don’t seem to budge.

It’s also great for soaking up spills. If something sticky hits the floor, sprinkle some salt on it right away. It absorbs the mess, making it easier to wipe up. Just another reason to keep it stocked.

Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner

Sal Suds is my go-to when I need something strong but still safe for the environment. It’s biodegradable and works on everything from greasy stovetops to outdoor furniture. A little goes a long way, which means one bottle lasts me months.

It’s especially great for floors. I mix a capful with warm water, and it leaves my hardwoods clean without that sticky residue some cleaners leave behind.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is like that one friend who’s good at everything—cleaning, freshening, and even extending the life of your produce. I always keep a gallon or two tucked away, plus a spray bottle for daily tasks. A quick vinegar-and-water mix tackles cutting boards, pots, pans, and even stubborn microwave messes. Bonus tip? A vinegar soak for fruits and veggies not only makes them taste fresher but keeps them from going bad too fast.

It’s also a superstar in cleaning drains. I sprinkle baking soda, pour in vinegar, and finish with citrus peels for a kitchen that smells fresh and clean. Trust me, you’ll wonder how you managed without it.

Mrs. Meyer’s Everyday Cleaner

Mrs. Meyer’s Lemon Verbena Cleaner is my go-to when I need something quick and premixed. A little goes a long way, and it leaves sinks and surfaces spotless without that overwhelming chemical smell. It’s perfect for the kitchen, bathroom, and everywhere in between.

What I love most? It’s easy on your hands, which is a lifesaver when you’re scrubbing a sink for the third time that day because little hands were “helping.” If you haven’t tried it, grab a bottle—it’s worth it.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of those things that’s always on hand because it can do just about everything. From lifting stains off Tupperware to brightening up your laundry, it’s a game-changer. I mix it with water for a paste that works wonders on stubborn spots.

When the sink drains need some love, I toss in baking soda, pour white vinegar over it, and finish with a few lemon peels. It bubbles up like a mini science experiment—and leaves your kitchen smelling fresh.

Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber cloths are a must-have in my cleaning stash. They’re affordable, durable, and work on just about any surface without leaving streaks. I buy them in bulk, but if you can, spring for the thicker, premium kind—they last longer and feel sturdier in your hand.

These rags are great for dusting, cleaning mirrors, or wiping sticky fingerprints off the fridge. Bonus? They’re washable, so you can reuse them again and again. That’s one less thing to toss in the trash.

Sprayway Glass Cleaner

Sprayway Glass Cleaner has completely replaced Windex in my house. The foaming formula doesn’t drip all over the place, which is a win when you’re cleaning mirrors or windows with a toddler underfoot. It leaves everything streak-free, whether it’s glass, stainless steel, or even toilet bowls (yes, I use it there too).

What makes it stand out is how effortlessly it cuts through smudges and fingerprints—because we both know those show up everywhere. Keep a can handy, and you’ll never look back.
