Woman says she started digging into her brother’s girlfriend after one lie felt off — and the relationship fell apart once the fake dead siblings, fake marriages, fake degrees, and fake trauma all started unraveling

A woman on Reddit said she never expected one small lie to expose an entire fake life.

She wrote that her younger brother, whom she called Adam, had a brutal childhood. Their father died of cancer when Adam was still a kid, their mother was abusive and likely had untreated mental health issues, and Adam eventually spiraled into alcoholism. After a hospitalization a couple of years earlier, he got sober. She said he had been clean for more than two years, and a big part of that stability came from his relationship with a woman she called Eve. For about two years, Eve had seemed like the best thing that ever happened to him. She was warm, attentive, generous with the family, and especially kind to the poster’s children.

Over that time, Eve also told the family an unbelievable amount about her past. According to the post, she said she had a twin brother who died in high school, another brother who died in the Iraq war, and parents who favored the dead siblings over her. She said she was originally from Scotland, that her father was a sheep farmer who moved to America to buy a cattle farm because of cowboy movies, and that she had dual citizenship. She also claimed she spoke 16 languages and had multiple degrees. Then came the relationship stories: three divorces, one involving a partner who had gender reassignment surgery, one husband who died by suicide, and another who tried to kill her, shot her, then ran from police and died in a ditch. She even showed the family a scar. The woman said the stories were tragic, but Eve delivered them with such detail and emotion that everyone believed her.

The turning point came after Adam and Eve had an argument. Adam came over upset and told his sister that Eve had lied about still talking to a male friend from high school — a guy he already disliked because he felt the man disrespected both him and the relationship. The woman wrote that this one lie bothered her enough that she started digging. She had some cybersecurity training from community college and said she had experience using public records, data aggregation sites, and online search tools. She also said Eve had recently switched her social media to her actual last name, which made the search much easier.

What she found was far worse than she expected. She said piece by piece, the backstory started collapsing. The twin brother was made up. The older brother who supposedly died in war was made up. The ex-fiancé was made up. The loss of a child was made up. The abuse story she had recently used against Adam in arguments was made up. The “multiple degrees” and “16 languages” were fake too. Even the divorces were not what she claimed. In the final update, the poster said the truth was that Eve had told so many lies over so much time that Adam felt like almost the entire relationship had been built on fiction.

When the woman sent Adam the proof, Eve immediately confessed and took him to visit her parents to explain. According to the update, Eve’s parents said she had untreated borderline personality disorder. Adam, who the woman described as big-hearted and deeply loyal, did not leave right away. In fact, he initially doubled down. He told his sister he did not want to “toss her aside for being human” and thought staying with her was the moral thing to do. The woman and her husband decided to support him anyway because they loved him and did not want him isolated. They even invited him to dinner and told him repeatedly that he was the victim here. Eve, meanwhile, tried a different tactic. She told Adam she could never be around his sister and brother-in-law again because she was “scared” of them. The poster said she and her husband made it clear they would never be rude to anyone Adam dated and would not give Eve an excuse to cut him off from them.

That apparently ended the relationship within a week.

In the final update, the woman said that after that supportive family dinner, Eve went out “with friends to a bar.” Given that the whole blowup had started because she was lying about another man, Adam asked the obvious questions: where had she gone, and with whom? Eve’s response was that she did not have to prove anything to him and that she “can’t heal like this.” To Adam, that was the last straw. He told her he could not stay in a relationship where he could not trust her. Her response was to give him 30 days to move out. Instead of dragging it out, the family helped him move that weekend. The woman said he was reeling from the whiplash of realizing the woman he thought he might marry had fabricated huge sections of her life, but he had a strong support system and was even trying to quit smoking in the middle of all of it.

By the end of the update, the sister sounded less angry than stunned. What began as “my brother’s girlfriend lied about one guy from high school” turned into a total collapse of identity: fake dead siblings, fake trauma, fake education, fake past relationships, and then one final attempt to make Adam look controlling for asking basic questions after being lied to for two years.
