These Fried Chicken Spots Are Better Than Your Mom’s Cooking

Fried chicken is one of those comfort foods that just hits differently when it’s done right. As a wife and mom who’s constantly juggling everything from cooking meals to cleaning up endless messes, there’s something magical about a bucket of crispy, juicy chicken that doesn’t come out of my kitchen -though I do believe my fried chicken is way better than anything you can get at a fast food stop.

Of course, not all fried chicken is created equal (looking at you, Long John Silver’s), so here are some spots that really know what they’re doing.

Raising Cane’s

Where to Find Them: Based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Raising Cane’s has over 800 locations in 41 states and is expanding fast.

Why It’s Worth It: This place sticks to what they do best—chicken fingers. Every bite is crispy, juicy, and just plain satisfying. I’m not usually big on sides, but Cane’s Texas toast is worth adding to your order (I swap the slaw for extra bread).

Cane’s is actually my favorite fast food place. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver for last-minute family dinners when you don’t want to deal with dishes.

Bojangles

Where to Find Them: Bojangles started in North Carolina and has grown to over 800 locations across 17 states, mainly in the South and Midwest.

Why It’s Worth It: Bojangles has a serious fan base, and for good reason. Whether it’s their perfectly seasoned chicken or those buttery biscuits, this chain delivers. My husband swears by their Cajun seasoning, and even my picky toddler is all about the mac and cheese. If you’re in Bojangles territory, it’s worth stopping by.

Slim Chickens

Where to Find Them: Slim Chickens hails from Arkansas and has grown to about 200 locations in 35 states.

Why It’s Worth It: This spot stands out with its variety. You can pair your chicken with waffles (which my kids think is a dessert disguised as dinner) and choose from a whopping 15 different dipping sauces. Whether you’re in the mood for something tangy or spicy, there’s a sauce for that. Plus, Slim Chickens just feels a bit more creative than your average fried chicken joint.

Hattie B’s

Where to Find Them: Hattie B’s has 13 locations, five of which are in its Nashville home base.

Why It’s Worth It: If you’re into spicy food, Hattie B’s is a must-try. Their fried chicken comes in six heat levels, ranging from mild to “Shut the Cluck Up.” (Yes, that’s really what it’s called.) My husband loves the heat, but I usually stick to their milder Southern option—it’s still packed with flavor, just without the fire. Either way, their chicken is juicy, and the sides (hello, pimento mac and cheese) are worth every calorie.

Chick-fil-A

Where to Find Them: With over 3,000 locations, you can find Chick-fil-A in every U.S. state except Alaska and Vermont.

Why It’s Worth It: There’s a reason people line up for Chick-fil-A. The nuggets alone can turn you into the hero of any family gathering, and their chicken sandwiches are just as good. Plus, even as a busy mom, I appreciate their drive-thru system—it’s efficient and keeps the hangry toddler meltdowns to a minimum. Just plan ahead, because they’re closed on Sundays.

Jollibee

Where to Find Them: Jollibee has locations across the U.S., but most are in California.

Why It’s Worth It: Jollibee serves up crispy fried chicken alongside dishes like Jolly Spaghetti (think sweet tomato sauce with a hint of banana ketchup) and Palabok Fiesta, a traditional Filipino noodle dish. It’s different, but in the best way. Their pineapple BBQ dipping sauce is the real MVP—perfect for those who love a sweet and tangy flavor combo. It’s one of those spots where you’ll leave saying, “Why didn’t I try this sooner?”
