Man Says His Sister Asked Him To Photograph Her Wedding for Free — Then Still Demanded a $500 Honeymoon “Contribution”
A 26-year-old amateur photographer says he was willing to help his sister save money on her wedding photos, but the arrangement fell apart when she also expected him to pay a $500 “standard guest contribution” toward her honeymoon.
The man shared the situation in a Reddit post, explaining that he has spent thousands of dollars on photography gear and has become the person his family usually turns to when they want photos at events. He said he normally enjoys doing it, but his sister Chloe’s wedding felt different because she wanted him to work the ceremony instead of simply attending as her brother.
At first, he offered a compromise. He told Chloe he would happily shoot the rehearsal dinner and pre-ceremony preparations for free because that still felt like family helping family. But he also told her she should hire a professional photographer for the actual wedding because he wanted to enjoy the evening as a guest.
That plan did not last.
According to the post, Chloe could not find a photographer she liked and asked him to photograph the entire wedding by himself. He agreed, but only if she bought him a $1,200 lens he had wanted for a while. The way he saw it, he would be giving her a full day of wedding photography, and the lens would be his compensation for taking on work that would otherwise cost much more.
Then the official invitation arrived.
Along with it came a registry note explaining that Chloe and her fiancé were asking guests to contribute toward their honeymoon. The man said Chloe noticed he had not contributed the expected $500 and asked why. He told her he thought the wedding photography arrangement already covered his contribution, since he would be working the full event in exchange for gear rather than charging her normal photography rates.
That answer did not go over well.
The man said Chloe “went ballistic” and argued that the camera lens was a gift in return for his help, but that he still owed the $500 because it was the “standard guest contribution.” From his side, the math was ridiculous. If he paid $500 while working a 12-hour wedding day in exchange for a $1,200 lens, he would effectively be working the entire wedding for $700 worth of value — and losing the chance to actually enjoy his sister’s wedding as a guest.
So he told her the deal was off. If he was expected to work the wedding and pay the honeymoon contribution, he would not attend and would not take photos.
His parents then got involved and accused him of being greedy and spoiling Chloe’s wedding over “petty issues.” That left him asking Reddit whether he was wrong.
The comments were not subtle.
One commenter said it was “insane” to demand $500 from every wedding guest at all. Another said they had never seen a couple demand that kind of honeymoon contribution and pointed out that 50 guests at $500 each would be $25,000. Others said the sister was trying to avoid paying for a photographer while also treating her brother like a regular paying guest.
Several commenters focused on the photography side of it. Wedding photography is not the same thing as snapping a few family pictures. It is hours of work, pressure, equipment, editing, timing and missed moments as a guest. Commenters said Chloe seemed to want the benefit of professional-level coverage without respecting the labor behind it.
Others thought the lens arrangement was already a bargain for the bride. If she hired an actual wedding photographer, the cost would likely be far more than a $1,200 lens. One commenter told him to remind his parents that if she had to hire a professional, it would cost “a hell of a lot more than $500.”
The honeymoon fund demand got ripped apart too. People generally understood asking guests to contribute if they wanted to, but the word “standard” made it sound less like a gift and more like an admission fee. Several commenters said there are no circumstances where they would pay to attend a wedding, especially while also working it.
By the end of the thread, the man’s boundary did not sound petty. It sounded like the first time someone in the family had actually added up what Chloe was asking for.
She wanted free or deeply discounted wedding photography, a full day of labor, a brother who did not get to enjoy the event, and an extra $500 toward the honeymoon. He was willing to help, but he was not willing to be treated like unpaid staff and a paying guest at the same time.
