Hunter says he sat down on a log after hours of hiking for deer and hogs — and then watched a pack of huge reddish wolf-like animals glide through the timber like ghosts

A Reddit user said he was a 64-year-old hunter who had spent most of his life in the woods, mostly in Texas but also on hunts for bear, moose, and elk in Canada and even wolves in Russia. He wrote that he had been hunting near Victoria, Texas, on private land with heavy hardwood forest next to a small river, a place he had hunted for about six seasons. He said the hogs there ran big, often around 350 to 450 pounds, and by the last day of that particular trip he already had his deer and most of the hogs he needed for the year. Because of that, he decided to try an area of the property he usually avoided since he could not get a truck near it.

According to his comment, he had hiked for a couple of hours into that harder-to-reach section and finally sat down on a log in the forest to rest. That was when he saw them. He wrote that what came through the timber looked like a pack of wolves, but they were taller than any wolves he knew and had a reddish color he had never seen before. He said they were about 75 to 100 yards away, which was still close enough for him to see how unnaturally large they looked. He added that, even with all his years in the woods, he had never seen anything like them before or since.

He said what really rattled him was not only their size, but the way they moved. In his words, they looked like they were “floating fast across the ground.” He said they seemed to be tracking something, moving through the brush in a way that felt wrong to him, almost ghostlike. He watched them for what felt like a very long time, though he said it was probably five minutes or less in reality. He made a point of saying he had been scared by brown bears before and had even had a 1,400-pound moose charge him in the past, but this was different. These animals scared him in a way those other encounters had not.

The hunter also said part of the fear came from the math of the situation. He wrote that he only had four rounds in his rifle and six rounds in the single-action pistol he carried for mercy shots if needed. He was confident in his shooting ability and even said he had once killed a running deer at 125 paces with a heart shot, but he was not comforted by that in this case. He said the way these animals moved made him worry he would not be able to hit them if it came to that. They were too strange, too fast, and too different from anything he was used to seeing.

He knew how unbelievable the story sounded and addressed that directly in the comment. He said that if somebody else told him the same thing, he would be skeptical too. But he swore he had seen them. He also made a point of saying he does not drink, not even beer while hunting, so there was no confusion in his mind about his state that day. Afterward, he asked local ranchers and game wardens about what he had seen. They told him there were red coyotes in the area, but not that big. Then, at a local café, an older Indian-Mexican man overheard him telling the story and said he had heard stories as a kid about big red wolves, though he had never seen them himself.

So the story he told was this: on the last day of a hunting trip near Victoria, Texas, after already filling most of his tags and hiking into a section of land he did not normally hunt, he sat down to rest and spotted a pack of huge reddish wolf-like animals moving through the hardwoods. They were bigger than red coyotes, moved in a way he thought looked almost unreal, and scared him more than some of the very real animal encounters he had survived before. He watched them for a few minutes, let them pass, and spent the rest of the day trying to decide whether he had just seen something explainable or something he still could not put a proper name on.

What do you think — if you had spent a lifetime hunting and then suddenly saw a pack of giant reddish wolf-like animals moving through the woods in a way that made no sense to you, would you trust your own eyes, or spend the rest of the day trying to explain them away?
