Woman says her roommates wanted her out of the house for an entire weekend so one boyfriend’s family would not know they lived with someone else — and the update says the living situation was worse than she first let on
A woman on Reddit said her housing situation had already been tense before one request made it impossible to keep pretending it was normal. In a post later collected by r/BestofRedditorUpdates, she wrote that she shared a house with two other women and paid equal rent, but one roommate suddenly told her she needed to leave for a full weekend because the roommate’s boyfriend’s family was coming to visit and did not know she lived with other people. When she asked if the roommate would pay for a hotel, the answer was a flat no.
She said the request was not framed like a favor so much as an expectation. In her post, she made clear that nobody was offering compensation, nobody was treating the inconvenience seriously, and she was being asked to disappear from a home she paid for so someone else could keep up a story with a boyfriend’s family. She wrote that the whole thing felt absurd because she was not some occasional guest or subletter. She lived there.
The comments on the original thread pushed back hard, and the later update showed why the situation had bothered her so much in the first place. The BORU thread notes that the update made the whole arrangement look even uglier, which suggests the problem was never just one unreasonable weekend demand. It was part of a larger pattern inside the house, where her presence and rights as a tenant were apparently treated like something negotiable whenever they became inconvenient for someone else.
What comes through most clearly is that she was not confused about whether the request was unfair. She was worn down enough that she still felt the need to ask if holding the line made her the problem. By the time the update made the rounds, the question was no longer really whether she should have left for the weekend. The bigger issue was that she had been living with people who seemed perfectly comfortable asking her to vanish from her own home to protect a lie that had nothing to do with her.
