Woman Says Her Roommate Started Using Her Groceries Without Asking — and Then Acted Confused When She Locked Them Up

A Reddit user shared that living with her roommate had been mostly fine until something small started happening over and over again. In the post, she said she began noticing her groceries running out faster than expected. At first, she thought she might just be forgetting what she had used, but after a few weeks, the pattern became hard to ignore.

According to her post, items she hadn’t touched would suddenly be gone or noticeably lower. Things like snacks, drinks, and ingredients she had just bought were disappearing, even when she knew she hadn’t used them. She said she eventually realized her roommate had been helping herself to the food without asking, treating it like it was shared.

She wrote that she brought it up, expecting it to be a quick conversation. Instead, she said her roommate brushed it off and acted like it wasn’t a big deal. That response is what pushed her to change how she handled it. Rather than arguing about every missing item, she decided to start keeping her groceries separate and more controlled.

In the post, she explained that she began storing her food in a way that made it clear it wasn’t up for grabs. She said she even started locking some of it up so it couldn’t be taken without her knowing. That’s when the situation shifted again. Her roommate noticed and confronted her, asking why she was being “weird” about food and acting like the change was unnecessary.

That reaction is what made her question the situation. She said she felt like she had already tried the direct conversation, and this was the only way to stop the problem from continuing. At the same time, the tension in the apartment had clearly changed, and it no longer felt as easy to live together as it had before.
