10 Things I Absolutely Never Store on Top of My Fridge -And You Shouldn’t Either

The top of the fridge always feels like a tempting spot for all the random things that don’t seem to fit anywhere else. Trust me, I get it. Between keeping the kitchen tidy, chasing kids, and figuring out where to stash everything, it’s easy to just toss stuff up there and call it a day.

But here’s the thing—storing the wrong stuff up there can lead to more headaches than it’s worth. I’ve learned this the hard way (looking at you, melted candy and tumbling appliances). Let me save you the hassle with a few things I’ve banned from my fridge top—and why you should, too.

Flammable Items

Putting candles, lighters, or even paper towels on top of the fridge might seem harmless, but it’s a risky move. That fridge generates heat, and when you mix that with flammable items, it’s like asking for trouble. Plus, let’s be honest—having a stack of paper towels up there isn’t exactly convenient when you’re juggling spills and sticky hands.

Keep those items somewhere safer, like a drawer or cabinet. You’ll avoid unnecessary risks, and your kitchen will feel a little more organized—something we could all use, right?

Candy

If you’re trying to stash candy out of sight, the fridge top isn’t your best bet. Heat rising from the fridge can turn chocolate and caramels into a gooey, sticky mess. And once candy starts melting, good luck keeping little hands from finding it—it’s like they have a sixth sense for sugar.

Find a higher pantry shelf or a sneaky drawer instead. It keeps the candy intact, and you avoid scraping melted chocolate off your fridge—and possibly the floor.

Plastic Food Storage Containers

I get it—those plastic food containers pile up, and the fridge top feels like easy storage. But here’s the thing: the heat from the fridge can cause the plastic to break down over time. That means chemicals could leach into your food later on. Not exactly what you want when you’re packing lunch for the kids or storing leftovers.

Stick to a cabinet or a designated shelf for your containers. It keeps them in better shape and avoids that avalanche of plastic lids every time you reach for something.

Cleaning Products

Keeping cleaning supplies out of reach of the kids is a non-negotiable, but the fridge top isn’t the solution. The heat from the fridge can cause some of those chemicals to release fumes, and if a bottle tips or leaks? You could end up with a fridge full of contaminated food that you have to toss. Nobody’s got time—or money—for that.

Find a cabinet with a latch or use a high shelf in the laundry room instead. It’s safer for everyone, and your fridge won’t become a chemical hazard zone.

Pet Food

Pet food and the top of the fridge just don’t mix. One wrong move, and you’ve got kibble raining down everywhere—or worse, jammed in spots you can’t even reach. And if the container isn’t sealed tight? You’re basically sending an open invitation to ants, roaches, and every pest you don’t want near your kitchen.

Keep your pet’s food in a sealed container in the pantry or a lower cupboard. It’s easier to grab when you’re rushing to feed them, and it keeps your kitchen critter-free.

Bread

Bread doesn’t need any extra help going stale—trust me, it’s already a race against time. Storing it on top of your fridge? That’s just asking for trouble. The heat coming off the fridge dries it out faster than your kids finish a snack, and if it’s in plastic, you’re practically begging for mold.

Do yourself a favor and get a breadbox or carve out a little counter space. It’s one less thing to toss out midweek, and your sandwiches will thank you for it.

Cookbooks

I get it—kitchen space is precious, and stacking cookbooks on the fridge feels like a win. But here’s the thing: the heat up there is bad news for your beloved recipes.

Plus, if you’ve got loose recipe cards tucked in, they could slip behind the fridge and block airflow—or worse, start a fire. And those cookbooks are heavy! One wrong move and you’re nursing a sore head (and probably swearing off homemade meals for a while).

Instead, keep them on a shelf or in a drawer. Your head—and your kitchen—will be a lot safer.

Small Appliances

Finding a home for those bulky kitchen gadgets is a pain. Rice cookers, air fryers—they take up so much room, and the fridge top looks like easy storage. But trust me, it’s not worth it. Every time you open the fridge, they creep closer to the edge. One slip, and boom—broken appliance, maybe even a broken toe.

If cupboard space is tight, try a rolling cart or an appliance garage. It’s way easier than dealing with the chaos of a falling toaster.

Medicine

Hiding medicine on top of the fridge might feel like a genius “out of sight, out of reach” solution. But if you’ve got kids, you know they’re part-time mountain climbers and full-time curious.

That fridge stash won’t stop a determined toddler. And don’t even get me started on the heat—it can ruin the meds, making them useless when you actually need them.

Stick with a locked medicine cabinet or a shelf that’s not only high up but also cool and dry.

Fresh Produce

Bananas, avocados, potatoes—they’re already temperamental without adding fridge heat to the mix. Stashing them on top of the fridge might seem smart, but it just speeds up ripening and attracts pests. And let’s not forget the horror of a forgotten onion rolling behind the fridge—hello, science experiment.
